DENIAL AIN’T JUST A RIVER IN EGYPT By James Lanza, CPFI

When I was a kid growing up in New Jersey, we had some cold winters. I can remember my mother yelling at me to put on a coat when I went outside. My answer was always “it’s not cold!”

When my Aunt would hear strange sounds coming from her engine while driving on the highway, she would say “it’s nothing!”

I had a woman come in to ask for information on different programs I offer for her husband. She said he didn’t think he had a problem. When I met him, he indeed had a problem.

Do you see where I’m going with this? Denial. Whether it be cold, engine failure or simply obesity. In the last ten years, I have seen more people with denial issues than ever.

The other day, a young lady came in holding a bear claw and a coffee from the bakery. (Insert your own joke) Anyway, she walked in, cradled the coffee in her arm and with her free hand grabbed a handful of “fluff” from her belly and said “This is my comfort! I don’t need a gym!”

She didn’t think she had a problem.  And sadly, most people don’t.

The reality is we do have a problem. And we need to fix it. Fitness has got to be a part of your life. Because Mother Nature, in her unfaltering ways, will eventually take your muscle and leave you weak. Getting out of a chair will be a hassle. Climbing out of bed will be a struggle. Walking up and down stairs will be a chore. And with the loss of muscle comes unwanted fluff. Which makes blood pressure rise. Cholesterol increase. Bone density decrease. Breathing becomes more difficult. And on and on and on.

So the next time you get out of the shower, take a good look at yourself in the mirror. If you look like a Bartlett Pear, a Weeble or a bowl of Jell-O, you might have a problem. Give us a call. We can help! We’ll make it fun. We’ll make it safe. And we’ll make it effective. At Lanza Fitness Personal Training we get results. You’ll see the difference.

Remember, Age is inevitable. Decay, on the other hand, is optional. That according to Dr. Henry S. Lodge.

Thanks for listening and have a healthy day!
